Girls in ICT Day champions young women's involvement in technology, encouraging them to lead and innovate in the ICT sector.

8 minutes, 34 seconds

Girls in ICT Day envisions a future where girls and young women are not just consumers of technology, but its creators and leaders. Every year, on the fourth Thursday of April, we come together to ignite a spark in girls, encouraging them to explore the exciting and ever-expanding field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

Supporting Girls in ICT isn't just about offering girls cool gadgets - it's about giving them the confidence to chase their dreams. It's about closing the gender gap in tech by creating a future where girls see themselves as engineers, programmers, and innovators shaping the world around them. The good news? Tech jobs often offer better pay and a more level playing field when it comes to salaries.

Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day is an invitation to see the incredible possibilities tech offers, to envision a future where girls write the code that shapes our world. Diversity strengthens companies too! By encouraging women in tech, we create a workforce that reflects the world we live in, drives innovation, and ultimately, leads to better results for everyone.

At Shop Circle, we're passionate about equality and empowerment in tech. We believe diversity is the fuel of innovation, and we're committed to inspiring the next generation of female tech leaders. We hope to light a fire in young minds, reminding them that the future of tech is theirs to create. Join us in celebrating and supporting girls and women in tech!

Medina Obralija (Development Team Lead)

My journey into the world of technology began from an early fascination with problem-solving challenges and a desire to understand how things work. I found inspiration through role models in scientific disciplines, particularly motivated by a teacher who did not believe in girls in ICT, but did support my creativity in solving algorithms. I always strived to show that I can do it. This support was crucial in my educational and career choices.

As the head of a diverse team of 50 developers, QA specialists, DevOps, and SecOps at HulkApps & Shop Circle, I lead projects that not only transform the e-commerce industry but also ensure our users get the most out of our products. At HA/SC, we are committed to fostering an environment where continuous learning, improvement, and innovation are part of everyone’s job description. This support system has been instrumental in our team’s ability to push boundaries. On the other hand, I am leading a program, Catalyst: Women in Tech Mentorship, as my personal initiative whose purpose is to empower and enable young girls in ICT, and to give back to our local community in Sarajevo. For all young women considering a career in tech, my advice is to be curious and not be afraid to seek help or support. Technology is a rapidly changing industry, and it’s crucial to keep up with the latest trends. Additionally, networking and building professional connections can be incredibly beneficial, not only for finding opportunities but also for exchanging knowledge and experiences.

Belma Panjeta-Music (Quality Assurance Specialist)

Following a successful career in law, I found myself at a crossroads. Despite my achievements, I realized that my current role offered little room for personal growth or learning. So, I set myself a new challenge - to find something that will give me joy working every day. It was during a collaboration with an IT company on a project that my talent for detail and analysis came to the forefront, leading me to enter into the realm of Quality Assurance.

Stepping out of my comfort zone was an uncomfortable feeling. But the only way to grow is to make that big step and not look back. Focus on the reward that comes at the end of the process, regardless of how long that process will take. Often, I referred to myself as Alice in Wonderland, navigating a world of unfamiliarity. Despite my lack of knowledge in basic IT terms, I laughed and embraced that feeling - it is ok not to know. I just enjoyed figuring things out and the amazing freedom that tech gives! That feeling of accomplishment when, after hours and hours, you figure something out, and it works! You start dancing in the middle of the night to the music in your head, oh what a joy, what a feeling!

Sara Konjokrad (PHP Developer)

My interest in technology stems from a desire to understand how things work and how we can improve them. I've always been fascinated by the possibilities technology offers for solving real-world problems and enhancing people's lives. The advice I would give to other girls considering entering this field is to follow their passions, stay persistent, and not be afraid to try new things. It's important to surround yourself with supportive communities and mentors who will champion you along the way. Remember, diversity is key to the growth of the tech industry, and your contribution is invaluable.

In my role as a developer at the company, I feel empowered by the opportunities for professional growth and the support from my team. The company encourages open communication, creativity, and collaboration, enabling me to contribute my ideas.

Lamija Dzambo Bajric (PHP/Laravel Developer)

My fascination with math and problem-solving is what initially drew me to the world of technology. I am amazed when I see that someone has created an application and thereby eliminated a difficulty/problem concerning society or a certain group. It inspires me to learn, to become better and to use my knowledge and professional skills so that I can make an impact in such a way. My message is to dare, to find what fulfills us, to invest effort and work hard. I love working at Shop Circle because it offers the space and opportunities I need to pursue my goals.

Amra Sabic (Learning and Development Manager)

As a mathematics enthusiast, former engineer, and mentor, I have directed myself onto a path whose mission is to discover and nurture new talents, so that they can unlock and reach their full potential. In my role as Learning & Development Manager, I am dedicated to the creation of a vibrant community platform for tech experts and knowledge seekers alike. My goal is to unite these two cohorts and my unwavering commitment lies in igniting the curious minds, urging them to embrace cutting-edge technologies and global trends.

From the very beginning, as my father saw the huge potential of computers and the Internet, he made sure I grew up around them, shaping my upbringing through constant exposure to technology. Thanks to his nurturing guidance, my interest in this field deepened at an early age oriented toward problem solving and programming. He constantly encouraged me to seek challenges in my career. As a result, from a young age, I actively sought out like-minded people who shared my passion. During my master’s studies at the University, I was fortunate to encounter numerous opportunities to learn and actively participate in the IT circles. Being surrounded by like-minded people is the easiest way to achieve extraordinary results. The tech community provides a variety of content to attract young potential. Be bold, take advantage of these opportunities!

Sarah Mizzi (Product Manager)

My background in Front-End Development and Product Management has fueled a deep passion for the intersection of business and technology. Web3, AI, and the financial industry are particularly exciting to me.

As a Product Manager at ShopCircle, I lead a talented team of engineers, marketers, and support staff to achieve product excellence. Throughout my life, I've found inspiration in many role models – family, colleagues, and even figures like Sinead Bovell. Now, my aim is to shatter glass ceilings and pave the way for others in tech, especially by highlighting the crucial role of female role models in fostering the next generation of leaders. Our voices are essential, our contributions invaluable, and our pursuit of equality is non-negotiable.

Bansi Kakadiya (Senior ROR Developer)

Technology, to me, is a realm of endless possibilities where I can bring my creativity to life. As a Software developer, I've found that the tech industry offers a unique space for problem-solving and innovation. I encourage young girls to dive into tech studies with an open heart and mind - it's a field where being different is your strength.

Our company empowers me by recognizing the unique perspective I bring to the table and nurturing an environment conducive to professional growth and success. As a Software developer, I am encouraged to continuously expand my skills and contribute meaningfully to our collective goals, ensuring that every line of code I write not only solves problems but also pushes the boundaries of what we can achieve in tech.
